Pumpkin muffins and Christmas cups

I haven't been to the grocery store since before Thanksgiving and I'm starting to run low on some basics. Cereal is gone except the cooked kind, bread, too. There's enough milk left to fill my coffee cup for another day or so but sugar is low and apples are gone. Of course, if you looked through the cabinets you'd say "What do you need to go to the grocery store for?" because there are lots of things in them that, just between us, I can' figure out why I ever bought. Artichoke hearts? 3 cans of them? I must have had a really good salad somewhere at some restaurant and felt inspired to try the same at home. Ditto the canned beets. I eat them in summer on salads, but when only 2 people live in a house - a can of beets goes a looooong way.

I hate the thought of going to the grocery store on a week night because when I'm through at work I want to Go Home! I like to get up at Crack-0-Dawn on Saturdays and go to the gym, then go to the grocery store, and sometimes even get back before ThePrince is out of bed.

Comfort food breakfast
But not this week. This week I'm working on Saturday (so I can slip on up to Sperryville) and after work there's the first of the Christmas parties. I am not going grocery shopping in a party dress. So tonight I'll take my list and my bags and replenish the larder - just the good stuff, mind you, and we'll be set for another week. But this morning I need something for breakfast, so after rooting around in the cabinets I found a box of carrot cake mix and a can of pumpkin.

this is not Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard
And that means ...Pumpkin Muffins!!! Because with 2 eggs, one box of cake mix and a can of pumpkin you can make one awesome muffin/cake. Throw in a few pecans, some raisins - and it's even nicer.

So today I will have a cozy breakfast and my first cup of coffee with the Christmas cups.

And yes yes yes. I am still knitting sleeves. Happy Thursday to you, too.

  1. Mmmmmm...I can smell those muffins all the way over here! I was going to say that I don't use my Christmas mugs this early, but in truth, I have one I use all year, and have done since my son gave it to me a couple of years ago -- from Starbucks, a lovely, deep mug in a rich green (sort of like the background to your page this month!), with little evergreens cut right into the ceramic before it was painted and glazed. I love its shape, its feel...and its tribute to my hamlet, where every street ends in trees.

  2. Oh my goodness, the new castle is a fab-looking place! So relieved to discover that you made a move instead of just hanging it up. I look forward to visiting here now and then. :)

  3. Oh, I should perhaps clarify that I mean the virtual castle, the blog, in its new jewel-like setting! Though the real one looks great, too, all spiffed up for Thanksgiving and onward. :)
